September is often a hectic time. For those with younger children, school shopping, sports, homework, conferences and all the chaos that comes with the start of school add stress to life. For those with college-age kids, packing up the mini fridge, books, clothes and electronics and saying “goodbye” brings a different kind of stress. And for those without children living at home? Everyday life comes with its own chronic stresses, whether from work, family obligations or physical injury or illness.
Often, the last person that we make time for is our self. But, you can’t be any good to others if you aren’t good to yourself first.

Couch. Potato. Taken separately, these are two good things. But, put them together? Not so much! In the United States, we are on the verge of the perfect storm when it comes to physical inactivity and our kids. The rise of cell phones, video gaming and streaming has occurred just as physical education in schools has been on the decline. As a result, our young people are becoming dangerously less active.

Many parents ask me how they can help their child build a healthy lifestyle. My answer is – make it FUN! Recent research shows that one out of five children in this country is obese. Research also shows that the more active a child is at an early age, the more likely they will maintain a higher activity level throughout their lifetime. Children also learn social skills in relating to other children during “active” playtime. All of this research ties into the basis of our Morning FitKids Program for preschoolers at Cornerstone – having fun while making their heart say “Thank You!” Continue reading Morning FitKids Program for Preschoolers at Cornerstone

A question that I get asked all the time is “What should I look for in a swim program?” The answer is fairly simple. A swim program needs to be focused on water safety and have instructors that love kids, love water, and love to swim.
These characteristics need to be present in any program that is going to be considered in the running for somewhere I would take my child. A good way to figure out if the program has these things is by observing the lessons and asking yourself (or the director) the following questions:

During the long cold winter season, our bodies practically ache with the desire to move around outdoors in nice temperatures, unencumbered by heavy clothing, gloves and boots. But when the dog days of summer arrive, we need to be prepared because exercising in the heat can be risky.
Our bodies regulate heat by releasing sweat which allows us to cool down. And, when the body is sweating, it’s losing fluid. If your body can no longer cool itself down, it starts storing heat inside resulting in a rise to your core temperature, putting your internal organs and central nervous system at risk. Remember when we were kids, when jumping, twirling, climbing were done with ease and were a natural part of every day living? So what happened between then and now?
One answer may be that our balance systems have become diminished as a natural consequence of aging. What are these systems (there are three of them) and how can we work to improve them for better balance for life?
