On my 43rd birthday, February 17th, 2010, I weighed 239 lbs. During May of 2010, I went to support the Fox Chase Cancer Center team (with whom my wife is involved), which participates in the Broad Street Run every year. I stood there watching 60 year olds run by, 70 year olds run by… “I’m 43 years old!…
My family joined Cornerstone right after they opened in 1997. My mom, Bev Reilly, would come in regularly for her work out and drop me off in CornerKids to play. When I started getting a little bit older, I got involved with sports, everything from tee-ball to soccer….
My family skis together in Colorado once a year. We go as many days in a row that we can so we can enjoy every second out on the mountain together. My kids (9 and 13 years old) love it; they’re fast!…

The dreaded 3-0. Turning 30 is a birthday that makes most people cringe, but not for me. This high school mathematics teacher is celebrating her 30th birthday by competing in her first triathlon on Saturday, June 22nd.
A Mother-Daughter Duo Member Story, in Honor of Mother’s Day…
Diane: About 13 years ago, my children and I were in a really bad car accident. The doctors told me that I would never walk again – words that shook my world as a busy wife and mother of two young children.
My wife joined Cornerstone New Hope in June 2011, around the same time that I retired. I was in good shape having been a runner for over 35 years, but wasn’t as active due to some lingering, “wear and tear” injuries from running….
I joined Cornerstone 5 years ago when a friend recommended their classes. I enjoyed taking Zumba for about a year and a half, but was looking for a more focused workout and looked around the club for something more suited to me….
About 2 years ago I started running. It wasn’t really a planned thing – I just wanted to be healthier so I started. Soon enough I was registered for a couple of races, including a half marathon this past November. I also worked out occasionally to maintain my endurance….
In October of 2006, I survived a heart attack. When I was released from the hospital, I began a 12-week rehabilitation program at the Doylestown Hospital. It was a very beneficial program, as I had lost about 30lbs after it all (I was 228 when I started)….
Maria Duffy, Jenny Baker, and Rosanne Schmidt…
Jenny (Age, 39): We’ve been team training together over the past 3-5 years with various group members at any given time. We had taken classes with Matt and had decided that we wanted to train with him too.
I have always taken an interest in swimming as a workout and steady part of my fitness routine. But when I decided to get serious about triathlon training, I knew I needed that extra push. Cornerstone’s Adult Swim Clinic was the perfect way to get me out of my own training and into something challenging….
I moved into this area in May 2012 and immediately knew I needed to find a gym. I had started working out in my college’s gym, but I didn’t have much experience and never worked with a personal trainer. I developed my workouts through magazines and mainly did cardio….
When I stopped playing football about five years ago, I knew I needed to find a gym to replace my activity in sports with a normal fitness routine. That’s when I found Cornerstone. I always liked the weightlifting part of football and wanted to continue that, even after I stopped playing….
When the results of my biopsy came back, I was just as shocked as my doctors to learn that my tumor was benign. All of a sudden, my stage 1 lung cancer diagnosis went from a death sentence to a second chance at life….
For some people, deciding to lose weight comes from an epiphany they have, a picture they see of themselves, a comment made by a child or friend, or the sudden realization that none of their clothes fit them anymore. This wasn’t really the case for me….
Cornerstone’s first 8 Weeks to Wellness Graduates share their experiences..
Tracey & Kim…
“I’ve been a member of Cornerstone for the past two and half years, but haven’t always come regularly. When Kim Starkey reached out to me about the 8 Weeks to Wellness program I was excited to have some accountability to get out of the workout rut I was in.
For the Shulby’s, working out is a family affair. Bill and Kathy Shulby are longtime Cornerstone members and their children have followed their lead. Shawn Harrison started training with Bill years ago. John, their 20-year-old son, picked up training with Shawn while on the track team at Central Bucks East so he could learn proper form for exercising….
I have always been overweight, for as long as I can remember. I tried every diet fad imaginable, Jenny Craig, Atkins, you name it I did it. Well, at least for a couple weeks, then it was back off due to the usual: not enough time to go to the gym, can’t afford a gym membership right now, healthier food is expensive….
I wish I could visit Cornerstone every day. I am a member at New Hope and The TreeHouse, visiting to exercise weekly. I’ve done yoga, Zumba, personal training, and I work out on the floor. I have yet to try Spinning and Pilates, which are next on my list….
My parents joined Cornerstone in 1996. Ever since 7th grade, my mom would sign me up for Personal Training but I never really got into it. Over spring break last year I wasn’t doing anything and my mom was going to the gym every day so I decided to go with her….
Around 5 or 6 years ago I was a member at another gym. I had gone for about 3 years, before I realized how bored I was! I got out of the routine, and once you’re out of it, it’s so hard to get back in it….
When Cornerstone opened in New Hope in 2006, I checked it out and joined – I live right across the street and it was very convenient. In the beginning, I was active and visited often. But then there was a long time when I just stopped coming….
When I joined in August of 2011, my goal was to “get fit”. I had taken some time off from exercising to pursue my real estate career (www.jencurryhomes.com). I wanted to get back in shape to be able to keep up with my three young boys and their schedules….
I joined Cornerstone Warrington in 2004 because I wanted to be more physically active. I started by swimming laps in their pool and I noticed their classes, so I decided to try them. It was a great workout and I really enjoyed the pools….
I’ve always been an active, Type A personality. So, I joined Cornerstone in September 2000 because I just felt like being fit; it was as simple as that. I visit Cornerstone New Hope and Doylestown to work out Monday through Friday, taking classes like Spinning, Group Power & Group Kick, Strive, and Step and Tone….
I have always been a runner, so I didn’t feel like I needed to go to a gym. I’d run outside in any weather all the time. I got to a point where I started developing arthritis in my foot, so running wasn’t an option anymore….
I decided to work with a personal trainer because I found that the workouts that I was doing were not reducing the arthritis pain in my knees. I thought I needed someone with the expertise in exercising to provide the proper routines….
I joined Cornerstone Doylestown about 4 years ago. After I retired, I’d go to pick my granddaughters at school. They’d jump in my arm and I’d almost fall over. I knew I needed some organized work outs. That’s when someone told me about the Silver Sneakers classes – and I’ve been going twice a week since….

She had been working with me previous to the surgery, helping me to prepare by working on strengthening, muscle tone, and balance in my walking stride….
My husband Steve and I joined Cornerstone in 1995. Initially, I enjoyed doing classes in the Zone as well as many other group classes. We were always into fitness, but Cornerstone really allowed us to ‘seal the deal’ and make it a regular part of our lives….
My training sessions with Shawn Marie Baker have produced many positive rewards to my overall physical fitness and health. I have been training with Shawn Marie Baker since joining Cornerstone Health & Fitness in April 2011.
My primary goal when I joined Cornerstone was to find a physical fitness trainer who had a wide variety of training certifications plus many years of experience training people of varying fitness levels and ages….
I’ve been an employee at the Health & Wellness Center’s fitness club since 2003, before it was part of Cornerstone. Even though I was around people who worked out, I never really had done it before in my life. But a few years into my employment I decided to give it a shot….

My wife joined Cornerstone in 2007 and I decided to join with her. For the first year or so, I’d come in every day and get on the elliptical for an hour, hit the sauna, and leave. I eventually started getting into the weight room and lifting, but I had no idea what I was doing….
I’m a firm believer in traditional medicine as well as holistic. When I was diagnosed with Lyme disease 17 years ago, I felt my body getting progressively worse as the disease attacked my joints. The flexibility in my joints was deteriorating and I found that there wasn’t a lot out there for osteoarthritis….
I’ve always exercised but I really wanted to be PUSHED. My (then) fiance left forAfghanistanin March of 2010 and by November I was determined to be “wedding day ready”.
When I was young, I was a gymnast. That really helped define my body early – I looked athletic….
A year ago this month, I’d had it with myself. I always felt tired, sore and fat. My weight had ballooned. I was hobbled by a torn tendon on my right ankle. Climbing stairs was increasingly difficult. And I was quickly approaching 50….
Athletic competition and training have undergone many changes over the years, and perhaps one of the major shifts has been toward increased emphasis on correct weight training. Whether playing team sports such as soccer, football, volleyball, lacrosse, or individual sports like tennis, track, cycling or speedskating, more athletes are now depending on a structured weight training program to increase performance and to give them an edge over their competition….
I was introduced to Cornerstone by friends in January 2010. I joined the New Hopeclub and immediately noticed the customer service, a trait which I also strive to uphold in my restaurant. When I started working out on the fitness floor, trainer Ryan Tonucci frequently stopped by to give me complimentary tricks and tips on my form while lifting weights….
Growing up, you could always find me at the piano. I’ve been practicing and creating my own melodies since I was about four or five years old. I started listening to a lot of different types of music when I was in my early teens – anything from rock and roll to classical….
I have worked at the Health and Wellness Center for 6 years, but have only worked for Cornerstone for about a year and a half. I am a firm believer that your fitness should be one of your highest priorities!
I joined Cornerstone back when it first opened in Doylestown in 1995. Even though I wasn’t truly dedicated to working out when I joined, I knew that I wanted to stay in shape and be active. I got into the Step classes and started coming more regularly.

I spent many years taking aerobics and steps. Years of pounding no matter what your age really adds up. I developed a lot of pain around both knees and tightness in the ligaments on the backs of my legs. On top of that, working in New York Citya few days a week requires a lot of walking, sometimes 20 blocks at a time – and this certainly wasn’t helping….
I started working out with Tracey Kling four years ago. We first met when I was pregnant with my second child and I was looking for prenatal exercises to keep me in shape and prepare for a c-section and its recovery….
Cheryl: We had never exercised before, not in high school, college, or after. But when I was 31, Joel was about 35, we figured it was time to get in shape and do something for our bodies. At the time we lived in Yardley and started going to Newtown Athletic Club….
One morning about 4 years ago, my doctor told me that I had to lose weight, and I thought, “Well, I’m never going back to him again!” But after years of watching my weight yo-yo, years of dealing with my bad knees and years of just not feeling myself, I finally decided I was just going to change….
When I moved to New HopeI immediately started looking for a local gym to join. When my friend recommended Cornerstone I took her word, took a tour and joined. Although I had tried personal training and classes in the past, I had some very bad lower back issues, and I chose just to do cardio….
I am an artist. I teach fiber arts. It is a sedentary world and many of the women in it struggle with serious weight issues.

Who’s the new gym on the block? That’s what I asked myself when Cornerstone opened its second location in New Hope in 2006. I was training at a different gym at the time but I decided to check Cornerstone out anyways – curiosity, you know?
I don’t always love going to the gym but I DO love going to my personal trainer, Bryan Whiteside. Although I’ve never really been a gym rat, I still care about my body and staying healthy. So instead of trying to schedule the time to go workout everyday (which is incredibly difficult with my demands at work), I invest in 2 or 3 solid days a week with Bryan….
I came to Cornerstone in 2004 when they ran the Get Active America Program. Other than playing football in high school, I really had no other experience with exercise. I needed to start somewhere. At the time, I didn’t work out, didn’t pay much attention to my diet, and I was a heavy smoker….
One day last year I had an epiphany… I realized that I felt much older than my age. I was tired, slow, sluggish and not feeling like the kind of young guy (at 27) that I thought I was. I hadn’t really worked out since I was on the track & field team in high school, aside from occasionally playing recreational sports, and even then I got winded pretty easily….
While filing out the survey for Cornerstone, I started to see a pattern in my answers. Sure, I go to the gym to keep fit like everyone else, but there is a definite reason why I chose Cornerstone as my health club… the people!…
I’ve never had a problem losing weight or gaining it and then losing it again and gaining it back. I’ve pretty much lost and gained the same 50 pounds over and over throughout my adult years. I grew up “the fat kid” and sometimes felt as though that’s what I would always be….
My story is not about a major change in my life through exercise but more about an “evolution” to my exercise program over the years.
Most of my life, I’ve been active. I grew up in Philly playing ball; street ball, basketball, half ball, box ball, wire ball, whatever kind of ball we could play….
I began my weight loss journey in September, 2008 at age 44, after struggling for many years to get the weight off that I gained during the pregnancies of my two children. I gained over 80 pounds with my first child and only was able to take off 40 of that throughout the years….
As a life-long athlete I didn’t need motivation to exercise when I joined Cornerstone in 2006. I’m one of those lucky people who actually enjoys a rigorous workout. I love what exercise does for my attitude, outlook and ability to concentrate….
I don’t know how long I’ve been a member of Cornerstone. Probably less than two years. But I know the benefits I received from membership took a sharp upward climb in quality when I began working with trainer Marie Stryjak. She is the best trainer I have ever been privileged to work with….
I am here in Mechanicsburg with almost 300 boxes surrounding me, my kids running around at my feet and one of the most predominant thoughts in my mind is my last couple weeks spent with you all at Cornerstone. Words cannot express how much I cherished and appreciated the thought, effort and sincerity behind the many kind gestures directed towards me and my departure….
I was a member of Cornerstone years ago and attempted to get myself into shape, lose some weight and feel fit by coming into the gym and doing my own exercise routine.
I soon discovered I had an abundance of optimism, but was sorely lacking in discipline and endurance….
I just wanted to drop you a quick note to thank you for creating such an incredible health club experience! I love Cornerstone & The Treehouse so much, they are such an important part of my life. When I first limped into Cornerstone a year ago, my body was battered from a lengthy battle with breast cancer….
I have been personal training with Mary Kroszner (pictured left) for about a year and a half. I started training with her when I was pregnant with my 2nd daughter.
I decided to train with Mary because I enjoyed her spinning classes over the previous 3 years….
We joined Cornerstone in February 1998 after Warrenretired. Both of us wanted to stay healthy and active in “our golden” years. Being able to keep limber, maintain a healthy weight, balance and develop muscles “but not look like a body builder” was how I think I explained my goal when I first joined….
In my experience the hardest part about working out is staying motivated and getting the results you are looking for. I’m doing The Octagon and it has provided me both.
I’ve belonged to a number of gyms in the past and have always felt like I had to go the gym, rather than want to go….
I joined Cornerstone Clubs in November with a very specific goal… I wanted to be able to fit back into my wedding dress for my 10th wedding anniversary in May. So to that end I loaded up my iPod with workout music and I jumped on the treadmill….
Thank you all very much for all the time and energies you clearly invested in planning such a rewarding day for our group! Everyone had a marvelous time! Some of the classes were totally new (and challenging) formats for us, such as the Octagon training system….
My Cornerstone story begins in 1998. I had recently moved to the area and a new friend of mine encouraged me to come with her to the club. I was apprehensive because fitness hadn’t been a big part of my life….
I’m your average guy. I’m a senior manager for a manufacturing company. I had a lot of stress and ate a lot of bad food. I didn’t really think about taking care of myself.

Want to run up the largest hill in Doylestown without stopping? Add Spinning to your workout! This was just one of the many recent challenges I faced while preparing my body for THE Boston Marathon. To qualify for this marathon I worked very hard during my spinning classes; focusing on the challenges offered in both speed and hill intervals….
I wanted to take a moment to compliment you on your Club and Staff.
I started working with Ann Krisher in December of last year. I travel for work fairly extensively, so I needed a workout that I could realistically stick to when I was on the road with access to limited equipment….
